HOGARTH, William, (1697-1764) artist . Engraved document signed ("Wm. Hogarth") to John Palvies, 17 March 1754. 1 page, 4to, 312 x 232mm. (12.3/8) x 9 in.), red wax seal in lower corner, neatly inlaid, minor soiling, WITH AN ELABORATE ENGRAVED VIGNETTE "Design'd, Etch'd & Publish'd, as the Act Directs, by Wm. Hogarth, 1754," the rectangular vignette at top of sheet depicting a complex arrangement of crowns, miters, scepters and other emblems of royal, ecclesiastical and civil authority, text accomplished in manuscript beneath (by Hogarth), contemporary endorsement on verso -- HOGARTH. Autograph manuscript (unsigned), 1752, 2 pages, narrow folio, tipped to a larger sheet . A leaf from Hogarth's household account book, arranged in column form, listing expenditures for washing, orphan's tax, a "pain of glass," "French prints," "100 metzotintos," etc. -- Manuscript document, a sheet of accounts recording sales by Hogarth's widow to the dealer Boydell, Nov.1782-Nov.1784. 2 pages, folio, tipped to larger sheet . Comprising 56 entries for sales of such Hogarth classics as "Marriage a la Mode," "The Four Stages of Cruelty," "Harlot's Progress," "Rake's Progress," and bound voilumes of prints. Together 3 items, bound in an album with five engraved portraits, folio, dark blue morocco gilt, gilt-ruled borders, gilt-lettered, gilt edges, red watered silk linings . An unusual trio of documents relating to this important English artist and printmaker, including a rare signed subscription form, recording a subscription for John Palvies to three (of four) prints in the series entitled The Election . Hogarth certifies that Palvies has tendered "...the first Payment for three Prints representing the Polling for Members of Parliament...Which I Promise to deliver when finished." In 1735 Hogarth had successfully persuaded Parliament to pass the Engraver's Copyright Act," to protect popular printmakers from piracy. A summary of the law is proudly engraved in two columns beneath the large vignette. Autograph material of this artist is RARE. (3)
