HOPE, James. Principles and Illustrations of Morbid Anatomy; adapted to the Elements of M. Andral, and to the Cyclopeadia of Practical Medicine , London: Whittaker, 1834. 8°, 48 hand-coloured lithographed plates by A. Ducotés after James Hope (lacking the blank g4, a few very light spots), contemporary cloth, spine lettered in gilt (backstrip torn and starting to detach, frayed along joints and head and tail of spine, dark stain on front cover, rubbed); C. Sandiford, Liverpool, stamped paper clip crudely pasted on title affecting 5 letters of title and 2 ink stamps on pastedown. FIRST EDITION. GM 2289; Norman 1104; Wellcome III, p. 299. GM 2289: "Hope left a fine pathological atlas with brilliantly hand-coloured lithographs from his own drawings. While the book does not equal the atlases of Cruveilhier and Carswell, it is important as being a great stimulus to the study of pathology in England."
