HORAE. (Horae ad usum Romanum, Lat. & Fr.). Paris (Philippe Pigouchet for Simon Vostre 1493. Small 4to (185x115, textual area 124x78, with borders 151-102). (89) ll. (of 92, a8-h8, l1-3, 7-8, m4. lacks l4, l5, and l6). 25 lines. With 19 almost full-page metal cuts, 31 small cuts of saints and scenes from the life of Christ. There are foliated 4-piece borders to each page including birds, flowers, and dragons (?), many of them in matched pairs od side-piece and foot-piece. The copy is partly illuminated. The borders on c4-c8 are illuminated in gold and colours and on c8b the large cut is also illuminated in gold and colours, leaf i8b has the borders and the small cut illuminated, as also the small cut on b6b. Initials and capitals are supplied in red and blue. The first leaf (Anatomical man) and last leaf (Pigouchet device) are rather thumbed, the device with small cut off part in lower margin. Also on the Pigouchet old faded annotations. Later (18th century) mottled calf, somewhat worn, clasp, gilt edges of covers, gilt spine in six compartments, red edges. Very rare. Photo. The composition is as follows. On a1a is the Anatomical (bleeding) Man showing planetary influence on the parts of the body, and other figures representing the four Human Temperaments with French inscriptions cut on the block.On a1b and a2a is the Almanach for XXI years; on a2b a large cut; a3a "Januarius..." (6 leaves of Calendar).On leaf m4a a Colophon: "Ces presentes heures à l'usage de Romme furent acheuees le xxii. iour de aoust. Lan de grace. Mil quatre centz quatre vingtz z. xiii. pour Simon Vostre libraire demoura[n]t a Paris...".On m4b the large printer's mark of Pigouchet. The Calendar is for 1488-1508. A very rare Book of Hours on vellum, there seems to be 4 copies existing. The BM copy, VIII,115, recorded as a quarto, 92 leaves ,a8-l8m4. The Bibl. Nat. is like the present copy in 89 leaves. The copies at Lyon, no. 342, and Versailles are incomplete. Changes One leaf with small hole and loss of a few words.
