PRESENTATION COPY, the front free endpaper inscribed, "To my very noble, and highly honored friend, Sir Peter Wyche Knight, the Author presents this as a Monument of his best respects and service. 5 Nonas May [ie. 3 May] 1640." Sir Peter Wyche (d.1643) was appointed to succeed Sir Thomas Roe as ambassador to the Ottoman Porte between 1627 and 1641, whereafter he became a comptroller of the royal household and a privy councillor. He signed the king's declaration of abhorrence at the idea of making war on his parliament in 1642, but joined Charles in Oxford where he died the following year and was buried in Christ Church Cathedral. Beneath Howell's presentation inscription is an elaborate signature of one "Foscarini Wyche." The previous page is inscribed "Ex libris Cyrilli Wyche" -- Cyril was Peter Wyche's second son. A number of passages in the book are underlined or otherwise marked in an early hand. Grolier 475; Lowndes III, 1129; STC 13872. See back cover illustration
