Beschreibung:

A Map of the State of Pennsylvania from Mr. Howell's large Map.
Philadelphia: [Matthew Carey?], c. 1794. Map engraved by Joseph T. Scott (310 x 510 mm). References in the lower right corner. Condition : wide margins, light offsetting (from a second copy place on top of this one?), repaired tears. When Reading Howell issued his large map of Pennsylvania in 1792 it was the most detailed and impressive map of the state. Howell would reissue the map several times and others would copy his work with their own versions. This map is one of the earliest examples of the latter. Although text above the neat line describes this map as “Engraved for Carey’s American Edition of Guthrie’s Geography Improved” it does not appear in that atlas, which instead contains a different map of Pennsylvania after Howell engraved by Samuel Lewis The reasons for this are unclear, though it has been suggested that perhaps Carey and Scott fell into a disagreement and the map was not included. Indeed, Scott would issue his Gazetteer of the United States in 1796 in competition with Carey. Presumably, however, the plate for this map remained with Carey who issued this version separately. Wheat & Brun 439.
