Iapi Oaye. The Word Carrier, Sioux Indian language newspaper printed by the Dakota Mission, Greenwood, Dakota Territory, during the time of the Sioux Indian War in the Black Hills of Dakota Territory. Volume IV, issues 1-12, each 4pp, 11 x 16 in. The text on pages 1-3 is printed in the Dakota Sioux language, in the Santee dialect. Only the back page of each issue is printed in English. The highlight of this complete run is the April 1875 issue, which features a full back page map titled: “Map of the Indian Reservations.” This is the earliest detailed map in a newspaper showing the locations of the American Indian Reservations in the Western US, from the Mississippi River west to the Pacific Ocean. A complete run of a very rare, early American Indian newspaper. Condition: Remnants of paper along spine indicating this was previously bound in larger volume; first issue, January 1875 fully separated from spine; wear along perimeter of each page, with some light chipping, short tears along edges throughout; light toning along top, bottom, and right edges.
