non-standard ca 1850 militia saber, with unmarked 28.25" long curved single-edged blade with 9" false tip and 3/4-length fuller, brass single-piece guard/quillon/knuckle bow with two-branch knuckle bow with slot for sword knot, brass ferrule and brass full backstrap with bird's head pommel terminal, leather covered carved wooden grip with brass wire wrap, total length 33.5". Brown leather scabbard with throat with single carrying ring, matching middle band and drag, stamped with 4, total length 29.5". While this sword is very similar to the 1885 Ancient and Honorable Artillery Horsemen Order saber there are several minor, yet significant differences, such as the markings on the drag, the color of the scabbard, the length of both the scabbard and sword, the length of the false tip and the lack of a stepped ricasso. Sword is accompanied by a notarized letter written by the family in which it descended with brief description and stating that it was the personal property of William Akers Bryant. Bryant served in Capt. Henry C. Douthat's Company, Virginia Botetourt Artillery. Also includes a brief history of the Bryant family. Extensive photocopy documentation of this CSA unit including muster roles with Bryant listed and a printed soldier's history with numerous references to Bryant. Condition: VG+.
