Identified Nickel-plated Model 1860 Colt Richards Conversion Revolver, c. late 19th century, serial number 198266, walnut grip, plated backstrap marked N.M. Nolan U.S.A., side of plated steel frame marked COLTS PATENT, triggerguard marked 44 CAL, steel cylinder with remnant of scene, top of barrel marked ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA, with a folder of information on the original owner, barrel lg. 8, overall lg. 14 1/2 in. Note: Major Nicholas Merritt Nolan began his military service in 1852 as a member of the artillery, then joined the 2nd Dragoons. He was commissioned in 1862, serving with the 6th U.S. Cavalry and was wounded several times during the Civil War, and was captured in March 1865. After the war he served as a Captain in the 10th U.S. Cavalry, known as the Buffalo Soldiers. He died as a Major in the 3rd U.S. Cavalry in 1883. A portrait of Nolan was sold in 2010 at auction.
