Title: Illustrations of the Botany of Captain Cook's Voyage Round the World in H.M.S. Endeavour in 1768-71... Australian Plants Author: Banks, Sir Joseph & Daniel Solander Place: London Publisher: Longmans, Quaritch, et al., for the Trustees of the British Museum Date: 1900-1905 Description: Parts I, II & III. With 320 photo-lithographic plates. Part. I: 31, [1] pp. text + 101 plates (numbered 1-100 with a plate 41a). 1900. Part II: [33]-75, [1] pp. text + 143 plates (numbered 101-243). 1901. Part III: [8], 77-102 pp. text + 76 plates (numbered 244-318 with a plate 46a at end) + 3 folding maps. (folio) 48.5x32 cm (19x12½"), original cloth-backed boards, paper cover and spine labels. First Edition. First publication of the drawings by Sidney Parkinson made on James Cook's first voyage to the Pacific, being photo-lithographic reproductions of the original engravings that were never published, due to a variety of factors, until this present work. Parkinson's drawings were the first representations of Australasian plants to make it to England; he died at sea in 1771. The third volume has a slightly different title than the first two, "Illustrations of Australian Plants collected in 1770 during Captain Cook's Voyage..." An Instructions to the Binder slip bound in Part III notes this change, stating that when all three parts were bound together, as was the intention, the temporary title-pages to the first two parts should be discarded. The work is here as issued by the publisher, in the original three parts. With typed catalogue entry from John Howell-Books laid in. Great Flower Books p. 48; Holmes Capt. Cook 127; Nissen (Botany) 74. Lot Amendments Condition: Some wear to boards, those on first part foxed, library labels taped to spines; contents coming loose due to the drying of the glue in the perfect binding; very good.
