Beschreibung:

Imitatio Christi Peregrinus de Pasqualibus, 1485 THOMAS A KEMPIS (c.1380-1471). Imitatio Christi. –GERSON, Jean (1363-1429). De meditatione cordis. [Venice:] Peregrinus de Pasqualibus, Bononiensis, and Dionysius Bertochus, 1485. Early edition of the most influential devotional work of the later Middle Ages. A cornerstone of the devotio moderna, a lay movement advocating the pursuit of a religious life in imitation of Christ through meditation and instruction, Imitatio Christi circulated widely in both manuscript and in print. It was often attributed in print to Jean Gerson, chancellor of the university of Paris and supporter of Joan of Arc, the author of the second work which frequently accompanies it, as here. Thomas's autograph manuscript survives at the Bibliothèque Royale at Brussels. HCR 9088; BMC V 390; BSB-Ink T-167; Bod-inc T-098; IGI 5109; Goff I-8; ISTC ii00008000. Chancery quarto (197 x 135mm). 56 leaves. Red initials with flourishes, red paragraph marks, woodcut printer’s device (a few small repairs, especially to corners of first gathering). Modern red morocco. Provenance: marginalia – Georgius Knaur (early inscription) – Mikulov, Cathedral chapter (Moravia, Czech Republic; inscription) – Georgius Stieslarus, deacon at Mikulov (inscription dated 1619) – purchased from Lathrop C. Harper, Inc, New York, 16 May 1955.
