In-4° : [24]-494-[2] pp. (marginal dampstains, a larger one on pp. 73-80, pp. 57-64 stained, some foxing, ms. provenance on title-page). Contemporary binding : calf, boards with a gilt frame and central medallion, gilt decorated ribbed spine (light scratches, light dampstains, some edges and one corner slightly dulled, ms. provenance on the pastedown). FIRST EDITION of this collection of letters, poems and panegyrics edited by Giovanni Battista Pio. Title within a woodcut frame figuring scenes of David's life by Hans Holbein and text illustrated with some initials with cherubs; printer's mark on the reverse of last leaf. The Gallic Saint Sidonius Apollinaris (431 ?-487 ?), born in Lyon, was Urban prefect of Rome until 469, patrician and senator. He was also the bishop of Clermont-Ferrand.
