IRVING, WASHINGTON. Autograph manuscript of Chapter 27 of his Life of Washington , with numerous deletions, emendations and revisions, n.d. [published 1855-59]. 11 pages, 8vo and narrow folio, written on rectos only of 11 leaves of paper (two revisions made on versos), the leaves neatly attached at top edge (by Irving?), first three leaves evenly browned, first page chipped at bottom edge, laid in a folding cloth-case. This portion of Irving's manuscript, paginated 469-479 by him, constitutes the complete chapter containing Irving's account of "[General] Greene on the high hills of Santee -- The enemy harrassed -- Greene marches against Stuart -- Battle near Eutaw Springs." At the end of the chapter Irving notes "We will now resume our narrative with the siege of Yorktown." Included is the printed text of the chapter from an early edition of the work, comprising pages 361-370.
