ISLAMIC MANUSCRIPTS – KORAN, Exegesis, in Arabic. [Copied in Azhar, Egypt, 1069 A.H. (ca 1658)]. 16° (150 x 110 mm). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER. 235 leaves, text in brown and red inks, approximately 17 lines per page, scattered marginal notations in red or black. (Lacks title-page and some preliminary leaves.) Contemporary Islamic binding, blindstamped arabesque in center of both covers, double-fillet borders in blind, centrally blind-stamped medallion on fore-edge flap. Provenance : ownership inscription on front pastedown and leaf 96, "Cleman, 11 Octobre 1862." According to the colophon, this was copied by Mohammed Abi an-Qasim Shabi in Azhar, Egypt in 1069 A.H. (c.a. 1658 C.E.). The Arabic is a North African form; the writer was perhaps Tunisian or Moroccan.

MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER. 397 leaves, text in brown and red inks, 14 lines per page, with 21 openings bearing later hand-painted borders of various colors, heightened with gold. (Closely trimmed, affecting some words at foot.) Slightly later Islamic binding, brown morocco, blind-stamped arabesques and wide outer borders in blind, with flap. KORAN, in Arabic. [Provincial Ottoman, 19th Century]. Small 4° (145 x 100 mm). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER. 335 leaves, text in black and red inks, 15 lines per page, sectional headings in white ink (faded to grey) against burnished gold, writing area approximately 115 x 60 mm within frame of burnished gold and black hairlines, scattered marginal notations and foliate designs in black, red and green inks. Contemporary Islamic binding, calf with wide outer borders, arabesque stamped in center of both covers with red and gold inpainting, stamped corner ornaments with red and gold inpainting (front cover rehinged with decorated paper).
