Beschreibung:

The great council among chiefs and leaders which settled the Indian war, January 15, 1891; mounted on board with imprint of John C. H. Grabill, Deadwood, South Dakota. Immediately following the Wounded Knee massacre, many of the Lakota bands from Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations fled into the badlands in the northern part of Pine Ridge Reservation, where they had the minimal advantage of protective terrain. Large numbers of Army troops were immediately brought in to occupy the reservation and protect the Agency buildings and staff. After two weeks of desultory skirmishing, and ongoing negotiations, the Lakota leaders agreed on January 15 to move back to the Agency and receive rations. Grabill documented the council at which this decision was taken. An Army officer is seen mounted at center, waiting to take news of the surrender to General Nelson A. Miles, in command of the occupation. Condition: Corners chipped, several light stains and minor abrasions to image.
