Read more Jack Butler Yeats Lot 15 - 'The Turf Cutter's Donkey' Estimate: €15,000 - €25,000 Commissioned for Patricia Lynchs 1934 Irish fantasy novel The Turf-Cutters Donkey, this pen and ink drawing was reproduced as a frontispiece, facing the title page, and captioned There were the lights of home shining through the darkness Drawn with Yeatss characteristic brio, with even the slenderest of lines playing an important role, the drawing depicts the moment when Seamus and his sister Eileen, returning home from the fair, see their cottage in the distance. Night has fallen and Eileen is half-asleep, but their donkey Long Ears, aided by the leprechaun, has brought them safely home. In the back of the cart is a walking stick, made of clove rock, that Eileen won at the fair, as well as food that the leprechaun has magically provided for them. Peter Murray, January 2023
