Delff the YoungerDelft 1619 - 1661Portrait of a young lady holding a book, her hand resting on a table, three-quarter length signed, inscribed, and dated center right: Ætatis 24 / Ao 1645 / JDelff [JD in ligature]oil on panel, unframedpanel: 41½ by 35¼ in.; 105.4 by 89.5 cm.Condition reportThe panel consists of 3 planks joined vertically and is flat and cradled on the reverse. The image reads well beneath clear varnish with fine details in the costume retained and signature intact. Retouching is visible to the naked eye throughout the right half of the background as small unevenly colored strokes. A vertical stripe of lighter paint about 3 inches from the right edge runs the length of the painting. Under UV inspection, small strokes of recent retouching are visible throughout, with concentrated areas in the right background area, the details of the black dress, the face, and a few spots in the white collar. The retouching has all been well applied and the painting can hang in its present state. Offered unframed. The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale. The
