Goodyear. George Wharton James (1858-1923) was born in England, went to Nevada as a young Methodist circuit-riding minister and later to a pastorate in Long Beach. Ousted from the Church after a scandalous divorce, he became a popular public lecturer on social issues, on his own philosophy, and on the Western scene. He placed particular stress on the beauties of the desert, which he helped to popularize by declaring that it was a region to inspire one to higher and nobler things. His most well known and useful books are on Indian blankets and basketry. (13)
