JAMES II (1663-1701) -- A Manual of Prayers and other Christian Devotions published by his Majesty's Command . London: Henry Hills, 1687. 8° (159 x 94mm). BOUND FOR JAMES II IN CONTEMPORARY BLACK GOATSKIN, gilt-tooled 'cottage-roof' design on sides with a pattern of flowers and volutes terminating in urns and enclosing a central lozenge made up of drawer handles and small tools, flourishing stems at sides, Royal crown at corners, gilt spine panels tooled with flowers and urns, comb-marbled endpapers, gilt edges (rebacked, preserving old spine, spine slightly faded, spine bands and corners rubbed). Provenance : 12-line prayer, 'Salve Regina mater misericordia,' on front blank and 28-line prayer, 'Magnificat anima mea Dominum,' on rear blank, both in the hand of James II -- [?] L. Inese (signed 4-line note on verso of front free endpaper, dated Paris 15 June 1727, stating: 'This book was made use of dayly by the late King James the 7th of ever blessed memory, during the last 14 yeares of his life, I do therefore desire it be carefully preserved in our familly') -- W.N. Astor (signed bibliographical note laid down on front pastedown, dated London, 1899, and recording a purchase price of £175) -- purchased by Lord Perth from Marlborough Rare Books, 1984. THE SMALL, PERSONAL PRAYER BOOK, IN A RICHLY-TOOLED GOATSKIN BINDING, TAKEN BY JAMES II INTO EXILE. The style of cottage-roof binding is comparable with nos. 40 and 41 in H.M.Nixon English Restoration Bindings which are on books printed in 1688 and 1689, and classified as 'probably not Robert Steel.' It is more closely related to the binding illustrated in Maggs Catalogue 1075, 1987, p. 163, on a 1693 4to. prayer book bound for William and Mary. This has a royal cypher at the center of the lozenge, but it has the Royal crown at each corner and other tools in common with the James II prayer book. THIS EDITION NOT IN WING OR ON-LINE ESTC. Wing 544 O records a 1686 12° edition under this title, followed by a Paris edition of 1692.
