Engraved architectural title with blank space for printed overslip, 32 engraved double-page coastal charts of all parts of the world including an anemographic plate, text and maps ruled in red, mounted on guards. Contemporary crimson morocco with gilt-fillet panel design, central panel delineated by double-fillet and roll-tooled border around a double-fillet lozenge shape, floral corner ornaments, spine in eight compartments, with seven raised bands, elaborately gilt, gilt edges. (Some light rubbing, slight fading to spine, minor repairs to spine ends.) Provenance : Algernon Capell (1670-1710), 2nd Earl of Essex (armorial bookplate, dated 1701 on verso of title). Third Latin text edition of volume 5 from Jansson's Atlas Novus . The original edition of the Nieuwen Atlas was first published in Dutch in 1638 in 2 volumes. "The first sea atlas (in the real sense of the word) printed in the Netherlands'' (Koeman). The maps of the Americas include: “Belgii Novi Angliae Novae, et partis Virginiae,” described by Burden “as one of the fundamental prototype maps of America in the seventeenth century. The model and nomenclature first laid out here were followed by later cartographers for over 100 years” (Burden 305, first state). “Mar de Zur, Hispanis, Mare Pacificum” “is the first [chart] of the whole of the Pacific Ocean” (Burden 292, first state).
