Condition: Canvas trimmed of tacking edge and lined, small area of retouch l.r. Provenance: Possibly, William S. Chanley, 1848, as Mountain Stream, "about 21 x 30 inches"; Chapellier Galleries, New York; Private Collection, Beloit Wisconsin; Sotheby's New York, September 26, 1990, Lot 16, as The Old Mill; Sotheby's New York, March 22, 1992, Lot 25; A. J. Kollar, Fine Painting, Seattle, Washington by 2005; Shannon's Fine Art Auctioneers, Greenwich, Connecticut, October 20, 2005, Lot 29. Literature: William S. Talbot, Jasper F. Cropsey, 1823-190 (New York and London: Garland Publishing, Inc., 1977), pp. 48-49; no. 19, pp. 338-339, illustrated as Highland Streams. N.B. This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the work of Jasper F. Cropsey, in preparation by the Newington-Cropsey Foundation, Hastings on Hudson, New York. According to Kenneth Maddox, this painting is the only extant painting by Cropsey painted in Scotland during his month-long stay there. Later, in Rome, the artist developed a number of his Scottish sketches into paintings.
