JEFFERSON, Thomas. Engraved document signed ("Th: Jefferson") as President, COUNTERSIGNED BY SECRETARY OF STATE JAMES MADISON and Gelston, Collector of the Port of New York, Washington, 12 June 1808. 1 page, folio (10 x 15 in.), PRINTED ON PARCHMENT, accomplished in manuscript with scalloped edge at top, and large papered Great Seal of the United States. Slight foxing and a few worm holes along bottom right edge. Finely engraved text with calligraphic heading: "By the President of the United States of America," beneath two vivid nautical vignettes (one of a 3-mast ship at sea and the other of several ships sailing past a light house and making for a heavily fortified harbor). The name of the engraver, E. Savage, is noted below the vignette. A ship's passport for the ship Minerva of Philadelphia, carrying 568 pounds of cargo, no guns and a crew of 13. A Mediterranean-type ship's passport, intended to protect U.S. vessels from seizure by the Barbary states.
