JEFFERYS, Thomas (1710-1771). The West-India Atlas . London: Robert Sayer and John Bennett 1775. First edition . This important sea-atlas and Jefferys' North-American Pilot both appeared in 1775, several years after the cartographer’s death, Sayer and Bennett having inherited his stock of materials. If joined, charts 1-16 form a large general map of the West Indies extending from the Gulf coast of Texas, Florida and the Bahamas in the north, to Venezuela and the Guianas in the south. Although the title-page refers to 40 charts, only 39 are called for in the index Immensely impressive in themselves, they are published with a text giving a ‘historical account’ of the islands. NMM III(1) 360; Phillips, Atlases 2699; Shirley BL II, M.JEF-4a. Large folio (551 x 395mm). Double-page engraved frontispiece and 39 plates, most double-page, engraved head- and tail-pieces (guards renewed, a few marginal repairs). Modern red half morocco, spine gilt, red edges.
