Das Fossil stammt aus den Yixian- und Jiufotang-Gesteinsformationen Nordchinas, in denen unzählige Fossilien von Pflanzen, Insekten, Fischen, Fröschen, Säugetieren und Dinosauriern entdeckt wurden. Jehol Biota nennt man diese Lagerstätte, die sich durch die Vielfalt der dort entdeckten Lebewesen auszeichnet und die deshalb zu den eindrucksvollsten überhaupt aus dem Erdmittelalter gehört. Vor 130 bis 120 Millionen Jahren führten gewaltige Vulkanausbrüche dazu, dass die Tiere in pyroklastischen Strömen ums Leben kamen. Hinweise dafür sind die feine Schicht vulkanischer Asche, die die versteinerten Überreste umschließt, und die Anzeichen von Verkohlung. Jehol Biota fossil of a lizard.
