JIANG TINGXI (1669-1732) AUSPICIOUS TURNIP Hanging scroll, ink and colour on gold paper 98 x 62.8 cm. (39 x 24 2/3 in.) With a long inscription by the artist, signed: chen, Jiang Tingxi Two seals of the artist: Chen Ting Xi Yin, Gong Hui One collector's seal of Emperor Qianlong: Qian Long Yu Lan Zhi Bao Inscription on the painting states that a turnip was found growing in the vegetable garden in the Summer Palace on the fifth day, tenth month, third year of the Yongzheng era (1725). It was believed that with nine roots, this turnip was symbolic of the largesse of the Heavens, reflecting the auspicious rule of the country by the Yongzheng Emperor. This picture was painted and inscribed with a poem praising the Emperor as a result
