JODOCUS ERFORDENSIS (fl. 15th century). Vocabularius iuris utriusque . [Basel: Michael Wenssler, ca. 1473 (not after 1474)]. Chancery 2 o (293 x 210 mm). Collation: [1-12 1 0 13-15 8 16-24 1 0 25 8 26-31 1 0 32 8] blank, 1/2r text, 32/8v blank). 310 leaves. 34 lines and headline. Type: 1:121 aG. Contemporary manuscript quiring. 6- and 8-line initial spaces. Unrubricated. (Very occasional light browning, very slight marginal worming at beginning.) Binding : contemporary blind-stamped darkened pigskin over unbevelled wooden boards, sides panelled with central lozenges, compartments filled with rosettes, fleur-de-lys, and "laus deo" scroll, the tools not in Kyriss or Schwenke-Sammlung , remains of two brass fore-edge catches, early paper label on upper cover, two paper spine labels, vellum quire guards, edges lightly stained red-brown (rather rubbed). Provenance : Ulricus Wenger: contemporary inscription -- Memmingen, Augustinian Hermits: 16th/17th-century inscription -- Donaueschingen, Court Library, Princes of Fürstenberg; sale Sotheby's London, 1 July 1994, lot 321 (to Maggs Bros, cat. 1233 no. 163). Second edition of one of the most popular 15th-century text books on canon and civil law, following Wenssler's undated edition printed "not after 1473." A copy in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek has a purchase inscription dated 1474, which puts the date of the present edition back one year; it had previously been dated from a purchase note of August 1475 cited by Madsen. BMC notes variant spellings; the present copy has "dictorum" on 16/4r first line, and "siue" on 28/3r.
