Vollständig mit allen Titeln zu den Einzelheften und den erst bei Abschluss des Werkes im Jahre 1810 ausgelieferten Vor- und Gesamttiteln sowie dem systematischen Register. - Die Titel verzeichnen Blumenbach nur als Herausgeber, in der Tat ist er jedoch der alleinige Verfasser des Werkes. Das 1. Heft in 2. Auflage, alle folgenden Hefte je in der Erstausgabe. - Das Werk widmete sich bis dato wenig bekannten Tierarten, diese dargestellt in 100 Kupfertafeln, hiervon 8 koloriert und 1 in Blaudruck. Gezeigt werden zahlreiche Affenarten, aber auch der Dodo, das erst kurz zuvor entdeckte Schnabeltier, Krokodile, Meeressäuger, aber auch einige Kuriosa wie ein frisch geschlüpfter Vogelstrauß u.a. - Die Zeichnungen entstanden oftmals nach Exemplaren aus Blumenbachs eigener Naturaliensammlung, hierunter das seinerzeit einzige sich in Kontinentaleuropa befindliche Exemplar eines Schnabeltieres. - Papierbedingt wenig gebräunt, vereinzelt etw. stockfleckig, wenige Bll. mit kl. u. schwächer werdenden Feuchtigkeitsfleck im oberen Rand. Vortitel verso gestempelt, Vorsätze mit hs. Anmerkungen in Bleistift. Insgesamt sehr gut erhalten, die Tafeln äußerst differenziert. Natural Sciences – Zoology - 10 issues in 1 vol. With 100 partly coloured copper engraved plates. Slightly later half leather binding with gilt title on spine and marbled covers (scuffed, rubbed and bumped, the back joint chipped (the binding, however, firm)). - The issues each with 1 fol. explanatory notes (the first booklet with 4 additional pp. preliminary report and synopsis of the ethnogr. portraits), 5 pp. preliminaries to the complete work, 10 sub-titles and a booklet index. Complete with all titles to the individual issues and the preliminary and complete titles delivered only at the completion of the work in 1810, as well as the systematic index. - The 1st issue in the 2nd edition, all following issues each in the first edition. - The work is dedicated to animal species that were little known until then, these are illustrated in 100 copper plates, 8 of which are coloured and 1 in blue print. Shown are numerous species of monkeys, but also the dodo, the only recently discovered billed platypus, crocodiles, a.o. - The drawings are often based on objects from Blumenbach's own natural history collection, including the only platypus found in continental Europe at the time. - Due to paper partly a bit browned, occasionally with minor foxing, a few pages with small and fading dampstain in upper margin. Pre-title stamped on verso, endpapers with handwritten annotations in pencil. Altogether very well preserved, the plates exceptionally differentiated.
