Johannes Larsen (b. Kerteminde 1867, d. s.p. 1961) “Maaneskin i Juni”. A moonlit evening in Kerteminde with a view towards Lundsgård Klint. Signed with monogram and dated Juni 1901. Oil on canvas. 79.5×94 cm. Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1929 no. 51. Den Frie - a retrospective exhibition celebrating Johannes Larsen’s 80th birthday 27 December 1947, in February 1948 no. 33. An early landscape painting that brings to mind the Skagen painters and the blue hour (l’heure bleu). Another source of inspiration could be Theodor Philipsen, who is often mentioned as Denmark's first impressionist painter. Especially the foreground with the painter's play with the light and the colours in the flooded beach meadow, gives associations to Philipsen and French Impressionism. Provenance: Merchant H. Melchior in 1929. Director T. Langebæk in 1947. We are grateful to curator and director of the Johannes Larsen Museum in Kerteminde, Jeppe Priess Gersbøll, for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. This lot is subject to Artist's Royalty . Artist’s Royalty In accordance with Danish copyright law, an additional royalty fee is to be paid for the purchase of works by contemporary Danish artist and some international artists who are either still alive, or who died within the last 70 years. × Read more
