3 volumes. Illustrated with numerous plates from photographs, facsimiles, engravings, etc. (4to) 27.2x22.5 cm (10¾x8¾"), original tan cloth. First Edition. Lavishly produced documentation of one man's mania for collecting. The mind-boggling range of subjects includes printed books, historical broadsides, manuscripts, engravings of all sorts, from maps to playing cards, bookplates, Papal Indulgences, early newspapers, coins, medals, pottery, fans, straw marquetry, etc. The second volume is entirely devoted to his collection of incunabula, while his collection of books and prints about fireworks comprises a virtual bibliography of the field. The astonishing dessert at the end of this gluttonous feast of acquisition is a color-illustrated section on Lusus Naturae, polished stones which exhibit natural images closely resembling humans or animals.
