JOHNSON STUMPS FOR THE ZACHARY TAYLOR TICKET: "IF THERE ARE NO STEPS TAKEN...WE WILL LOSE SOME VOTES" A letter of excellent political content, concerning a political rally organized by Congressman Johnson during the heated presidential contest between Taylor and Cass. Johnson had been named one of the organizers of an East Tennessee political rally: "The democracy [the electorate] of these four counties have determined to hold a mass meeting...Cal Haynes, Mr. James Fulkerson, Mr. F.L. Davis and Andrew Johnson were appointed a committee to invite persons of distinction to attend and address the people. Your presence...would be more than gratifying to the democracy generally and especially so to your personal friends in this part of the State...There is no excitement in this part of the state as yet, and if there are no steps taken to produce some, we will lose some votes. Brown & Jones made no capital for themselves or the cause -- the people were inquiring after the speaking was over if they were the candidates for the Presidency, for they scarcely alluded to Taylor on our side or Cass on the other. It seemed to be a contest between themselves. In fine they did no good, but both lost cast with their respective parties. Come if you can to East Tennessee..." Taylor, the Whig candidate, did in the end carry Tennessee in the election of 1848. Johnson, who rose to political prominence as a Democrat, is very scarce in the form of an autograph letter signed.
