JOHNSON, Samuel]. The Idler . London: J. Newbery, 1761. 2 volumes, 12 o (168 x 99 mm). (Some light browning, without final advertisement leaf.) Contemporary marbled calf gilt, covers with foliate border and fleurons at angles, floral spines with red and green morocco lettering-pieces, gilt board edges, spot-marbled endpapers, red speckled paper edges (spines a little rubbed and chipped). Provenance : Wilmot Earl of Lisburne (contemporary armorial bookplate) -- Later shelf mark on manuscript label -- purchased from Ximenes, New York, 19 May 1969. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION of these essays which had previously appeared in the Universal Chronicle , April 15 1758-April 5 1760. As the Rambler had provided release from work on the Dictionary , so the Idler , which was a "lighter and brisker" and fundamentally less serious publication, was a diversion from the labour of producing an edition of Shakespeare. Twelve of the 104 numbers were not by Johnson, including nos. 76, 79 and 82 by Sir Joshua Reynolds No. 22 was omitted from the collected edition. 1500 copies were printed and published in October 1761 at 5 shillings sewn or 6 shillings in boards. Courtney and Smith p. 83; Chapman and Hazen p. 142; Fleeman 58.4Id/2a; Rothschild 1248; Tinker 1342. (2)
