Documentation With documentation Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot painter of the people's activity As a painter of genre scenes, village scenes and moralizing themes, Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot introduced the style of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (ca. 1520 1569) in hometown of Utrecht. With an oeuvre of approximately 350 paintings, he was a busy bee in the 17th century. He demonstrated his qualities at their best in his peasant scenes and village scenes. The lively presentations usually were built up according to a recurring pattern: a wide village street, housed on both sides, that lead up to a point at the horizon, populated by numerous figures, doing the most various things. Another characteristic is the return of the moralizing note: the ill are cared for, along with card players and children playing. In this painting, the scene is located against the background of a village in the vicinity of Utrecht. Also in other paintings, the painter used existing town views, something that did not yet have an extensive pictorial tradition at that time and by which the painter distinguished himself from his contemporaries.
