Josef Hoffmann Rare vase ca. 1911 Etched opaque and brown flashed glass. 4 3/4 in. (12.1 cm.) high Executed by Johann Loetz Witwe, Bohemia.
Literature Gabriele Fahr-Becker, Wiener Werkstätte 1903-1932, Cologne, 2003, p. 125 for a similar example; Jan Mergl, et al., Loetz: Bohemian Glass 1880-1940, New York, 2003, p. 237, fig. 195 for a similar example; David Hanks ed., The Century of Modern Designs: Selections from the Lilianne and David M. Stewart Collection, Montreal, 2010, p. 19 for a similar example Catalogue Essay Josef Hoffmann's decoration for the present vase comprises cordate leaves and bellflowers held within a strict geometric ground. Cased flowers bloomed often at the Werkstätte; examples include a gold and opal pendant by Eduard Josef Wimmer Wisgrill (1911); a ceramic jar by Dagobert Peche (1912); Mäda Primavesi’s gold and ivory bracelet designed by Hoffmann (1914); and, much earlier, in the Werkstätte’s own monogram -- the rose mark.
