JOSEF WAGNER (1901–1957) A Madonna Starting price: 180 000 CZK (6 792 EUR) Hammer price: 180 000 CZK (6 792 EUR) Description dimensions: 94 cm (height) period: 1945, Bohemia Josef Wagner started his training under Quido Kocian in Horovice, continuing at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts under professor Jan Štursa and, after his death, with Otakar Španiel Wagner's artistic feeling was formed through his his intimate knowledge of Baroque sculptures by Matthias Braun in Kuks. Travels to Italy and France also opened new horizons for this gifted artist. In 1926, after returning from Paris, he enrolled at to study architecture at the School of Applied Arts in Prague under Otto Gutfreund One can encounter a number of Wagner's works in public areas of Prague today, such as the Jaroslav Vrchlický memorial in Petřín, the Antonín Dvořák memorial near the Rudolfinum, and the statue of Charles IV in front of the rectorate of Charles Universitz. This wooden sculpture dating from the artist's later period comes from the important collection of architect and painter Josef Wagner Oak.
