Title: Kaigai Shinwa [Foreign news, relations between China and Great Britain, and the story of the Opium War, based on the I fei fan chiang lu] Author: Mineta Fuko Place: [Japan] Publisher: Mineta-shi zo Date: 1849 Description: 5 volumes. With woodcut illustrations, some tinted; a few maps. Printed on double leaves. 26x17.7 cm (10¼x7"), wrappers stitched in Japanese style, paper cover labels, outer wrapper with bone clasps. Rare Japanese account, based largely on Chinese sources, of the First Opium War. The book was banned by the shogunate, and the author and anonymous illustrator were both thrown into prison, and the woodblocks destroyed. The illustrations are sometimes attributed to Utagawa Sadahide. Lot Amendments Condition: Outer wrapper worn and stained, with some repairs and reinforcements; some staining and mildew damage to volume wrappers, most notable vols. 4 and 5, with some fairly minor internal staining; overall very good.
