Original drab paper boards, UNCUT, A2-3 unopened at top edge, printed spine label (neatly rebacked, preserving part of original spine, printed label with one corner defective, front hinge starting); green morocco pull-off case. Provenance : Frank Brewer Bemis (bookplate) -- A.S.W. Rosenbach Collection (card laid-in) -- Louis H. Silver (bookplate), sold in the sale of Newberry Library duplicates from the Silver accession, Sotheby's, 9 November 1965, lot 186 -- purchased from John F. Fleming, New York, 11 November 1966. Exhibited : Grolier Club ' This powerfull rime ,' 1975, no. 57. FIRST EDITION, exhibiting both forms of the errata. Wise (1923) asserted that copies with the single-line errata constituted a first issue, but copies in boards with both forms are noted, and as Hayward points out, from reference to the poet's correspondence, both single-line and five-line forms were printed prior to publication. The poem, written at age 21, includes the famous line "a thing of beauty is a joy forever," which became, a half century later, a touchstone of the aesthetic movement.
