JFK'S CONFIRMS HIS CANDIDACY FOR SENATOR. The '58 Senatorial run was JFK's final preparation to his 1960 presidential bid. He had already completed three terms in the House then gained the Senate seat in 1952, easily winning re-election to a second term. Here, he is listed along with six other Massachusetts pols, all of whom, but for gubernatorial candidate, Foster Furculo, are Irish-Americans like JFK. The form required an address, signature, and a statement (in "not more than eight words") of past or current public offices held, and "if he is a veteran as defined in...the General Laws the word 'Veteran' may be used." Kennedy describes himself, in an autograph notation as "present United States Senator, for renomination, Veteran." Kennedy gave his address as 122 Bowdoin Street. "Jack Kennedy loved Boston," Theodore Sorenson wrote, "and Boston loved Jack Kennedy, but....like many lovers they rarely lived together." Born in Brookline, raised in Bronxville, New York, with time off for summers in Hyannisport and winters in Palm Beach, Kennedy's "somewhat plain and faded apartment building at 122 Bowdoin Street across from the Massachusetts State House" was rarely the place he called home. In fact, Sorenson continues, "several other Kennedys--and their families--for a time claimed the same three-room apartment (No. 36) as their voting address." Prior to this 1958 election, Kennedy contemplated buying a permanent Boston residence, "but since his winters were spent in Washington, New York and Palm Beach, he settled instead for a summer home on Cape Cod" ( Kennedy , 20-21).
