KIPLING. Rudyard. The Absent-Minded Beggar. Boer War Families Fund. Linen Handkerchief. The Daily Mail, London, (ca. 1899). A cream linen handkerchief printed in blue, 464 x 470mm, full-text of Kipling's poem with a score written by Arthur Sullivan, portraits of Lord Roberts (Commander of the British troops) and Queen Victoria frame the text, with a detailed map of Transvaal and The Orange Free State showing roads and rail lines; The Absent Minded-Beggar. The Daily Mail Publishing Co., 1899. a folded pamphlet, first edition, 4to, (320 x 250mm), printed in green with a portrait of Kipling to upper cover, facsimile text of the poem on 2 pages, full-page illustration by R. Caton Woodville 4pp., with a duplicate copy. Kipling's patriotic poem was commissioned as part of an appeal by the British newspaper to raise money for soldiers fighting in the Second Boer War and their families. The Absent-Minded Beggar Fund was the first such charitable effort for a war, referred to as the origin of the welfare state, it raised a total of more than £250,000.(Qty. 3) Condition Report: 1.
