II in two parts, 2° (374 x 228mm), 21 engraved plates including frontispieces. (Zzz1 of vol. I with hole causing loss to 4 lines of text recto and verso, burn holes to Fff3 and a few other leaves causing minor loss, some rust marks and occasional stains, a few marginal repairs.) Black hard-grained morocco gilt by Townsend, gilt panelled sides with corner ornaments, spine gilt with globe at top and cypher CCW in bottom compartment (lightly rubbed, bottom corners a little bumped). First published in 1603, the History was the first major work on the subject to appear in English and highly valued for its prose style. The continuation was extended to a third volume published by Rycaut in 1700. Atabey 1076 (this copy, wrongly said to lack 10 of the 21 plates; binding illustrated); Blackmer 1466; Lowndes III, 1286: 'best edition'; Wing K-702, R-2407 & R-2408.
