Kurtzman writes about the genesis of one of the most important satirical cartoons in American history: "Attached are copies of pages of a letter to Hef describing the kind of character I think we should build. Also sketches of the girl in her type situations. Some afterthoughts to the letter: first for a title LITTLE ANNIE FANNY. Her fact, in fact, is suggestive of little orphan annie innocence...wide blue eyes, blonde hair piled high. Her angelic looks are purely front! She's all worms inside! Save sketches, notes, everything. Make some trial renderings to whatever extent you'd like. I suggest a Goodman B. type drawing on a hard board that won't curl. Then throw in flat comic-strip type colors. Then let's get together on this." The bottom margin has pencilled numbers, possibly referring to Annie's measurements.
