LAFAYETTE, GILBERT DU MOTIER, Marquis de . Autograph letter signed ("Lafayette") to Dr. Neilson Jr., in New York; Paris, 9 August 1828. One page, 4to, address leaf (seal hole), a few short fold breaks, mainly to address leaf . A letter of introduction for a Doctor preparing to emigrate to "the better side of the Atlantic": "This letter will be delivered by Doctor Schaffener son to an officer of Armand's Legion, a great favorite with Colonel [Charles] Armand [-Tuffin, Marquis de la Rouerie] to whom Schaffener was a sort of aide de camp. Both of them your father in law has known in the Army. The doctor has for some years inhabited the isle of Jersey. He purposes to go to the U.S. and exercise his profession. How far it is a profitable plan I cannot determine. But at all events he may find a suitable employment on your better side of the Atlantic. I am sure my dear companions in arms and yourself will be disposed to assist him with your kind advice...."
