Title within ornamental typographic border, pictorial woodcut initials and engraved map of England and Wales (and part of Scotland) by Richard Lynne. With extra leaf H2 "The names of the Kentish Writers." Contemporary limp vellum, yapp edges, remnants of ties. Spine lettered in ink, recased. Condition : text block fresh and unsophisticated; endpapers renewed, upper third of spine lost but repaired with later vellum. Provenance : "Thomas Bushell," 17th-century signature on blank leaf at end (possibly Thomas Bushnell (1594-1674), speculator and mining engineer; page to Francis Bacon; "Celia Ffeinnes Her Booke," 17th -century signature on first blank facing title; sale Phillips, 17 January 1980, lot 209, £360, Maggs. first edition of the earliest english county history, with provenance of travel journalist celia fiennes . Celia Fiennes (1662-1741) is listed in FCLE as an early travel writer, who covered every county by either coach, or later, on horseback. Her journals' vivid descriptions of numerous locales included her opinions of the quality of inns and the collections of note in the great houses.
