LANDSAT SATELLITE – Photographs, c. 1980s. Color photographic mosaic of the Grand Canyon, views of the Colorado River. The five images have overlapping scenes of the Colorado River and numerous connecting smaller tributaries. The photographs include parts of the Kaibab and Coconino Plateaus, the Kaibab National Forest, the Navajo and Hualapai Indian Reservations and of course almost all of the Grand Canyon National Park. The left most area of the mosaic has part of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and the eastern most part of Lake Mead. This mosaic enlarges four sections of Landsat 4 orbital Path 38, Row 35 with one section from Path 37 Row 35 to complete the eastern section of the Grand Canyon National Park. Three of the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) instrument bands comprise this mosaic. Two are visible being TM bands 2 and 3 with the other being TM infrared band 4. The infrared band is used for with the photographic paper’s red sensitive light layer. The chlorophyll in vegetation reflects strong infrared wavelengths and when combined with the paper’s red sensitive layer produces bright red colors in the photograph. The brown dry surface areas have sparse plant growth thus reflect more of the normal colors of visible light. White snow cover is seen in several sections of the mosaic photographs. Sections of the Colorado River appear bright light blue, revealing highly reflective particles suspended in the turbulent river. The Colorado River averages a mile deep within the canyon. This mosaic’s path is some 300 miles in length. 5 color photographs processed on Kodak paper, 20 inches square each. The overall mosaic spans 42 by 72 inches.
