Beschreibung:

Large initial enclosing foliage, on a cutting from an illuminated choirbook, on parchment [Italy (perhaps Siena), second half of fifteenth century] Rectangular cutting, with a large initial D in purple with extensions of acanthus leaves in margin sprouting gold bezants, the initial enclosing a spray of similar foliage with gold fruit and seed pods, these emerging from a mound of earth at foot and on blue grounds heightened with white penwork, red folio no. clx at head, 2 lines of text with music on a 4-line red stave (rastrum: 41mm.), 2 further lines and a red rubric on reverse, slight flaking from ink of text, overall excellent condition, 213 by 174mm.; gilt framed with glass on both sides, chip from side of frame Here the cascades of thin acanthus leaves, painted to give a fluttering effect, recall the work of fifteenth-century Siena, and perhaps identifies the artist as a follower of Giovanni di Paolo (c. 1403-82) or Sano di Pietro (1405-81) there.
