Corallium species Pacific Ocean Man has had a fascination with coral for centuries, both for use in human adornment but also for its wonderful decorative nature—a point not lost on the Victorians, for instance, who used it along with other Natural History material to enliven their homes. The overall condition of this large branch of pink coral is remarkable given the fragile nature of the material and difficulties in transport from remote islands. This pink branch coral specimen is in its natural, unpolished state. The colors are, nonetheless, vibrant—graduating from a deep orangy-pink at the base, to lighter pink and creamy white at the tips. Probably retrieved from the sea over fifty years ago, it has been more recently mounted on a custom-fitted carved wooden base to enhance is excellent display qualities. Height overall: 20 in. Specimen measures 17 x 20 in. (43.2cm x 50.8cm)
