Le Roy D'Albion ou Nouvelle Angleterre .
Paris: Chez Larmessin, circa 1680. Engraving, trimmed within the platemark but outside the neatline ( 9 ¼ x 6 ½ inches, 237x167 mm, overall). French text below the oval portrait. Condition: Two very short closed edge tears in the right and upper margins. A strong impression. Matted. a stunning 17th century portrait of a native american chief by a celebrated french engraver. This arresting image depicts a wide-eyed (mustached!) Native American chief in ceremonial costume. The text below the image describes in detail the tribe's vast western region, bounded by Mexico, the River Mississippi, Canada and the famed fictional settlement Norumbega. It continues by describing the tribe as civilized and concludes with a description of chief's costume, including his feathered headdress, beaded necklace and elaborate shirt. This wonderful portrait is not only an example of Larmessin's superior technique but an invaluable likeness of a Native American king (albeit a fictional one).
