Laura Coombs Hills (American, 1859-1952) Roses in a Blue Bowl Signed "Laura Hills" l.l. Pastel on paper/board, sight size 10 1/2 x 12 1/2 in. (26.6 x 31.8 cm), framed. Condition: Toning, not examined out of frame. Provenance: A private New England collection. N.B. Laura Coombs Hills was born in 1849 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. She first studied art with Helen Knowlton, and later at the Cowles Art School and the New York Art Students League. Her earliest works are mostly pastel landscapes, portraits, and still lifes that she exhibited at galleries in Boston. Hills also supported herself by producing decorative arts such as greeting cards and posters, and by illustrating several children's books. Although Hills was first known for her portrait miniatures, she later studied flowers and recorded their 'portraits' in pastel. She continued to create these floral still lifes until her last exhibition at age eighty-eight.
