Lowry shared a friendship which lasted more than 30 years. Maitland was a Professor of bacteriology at Manchester University and Lowry would often visit him on Sundays. Maitland recorded some of their many conversations, the tapes of which are held in the archives at The Lowry, Salford and also informed Shelley Rohde in the writing of her biography on the Artist.
