'SOMETHING INSIDE ME WEEPS BLACK TEARS'. With six months to live, Lawrence bids farewell to the Mediterranean: 'I still love the Mediterranean, it still seems young as Odysseus, in the morning ... The only trouble is my health, which is not very good. For some reason ... I lost a lot of strength in Germany ... It is very lovely, the wind, the clouds, the morning sea that bursts up like blossom on the island opposite. If only I was well, and had my strength back! But I am so weak. And something inside me weeps black tears. I wish it would go away'. Amidst news of other present or intended visitors to Bandol, Lawrence focuses on the voice of Max Mohr saying 'the same thing over & over again: Alles ist nichts! Why must everybody say it? -- when it is only they who are nothing: & perhaps not even they'.
