LAWSON, John Parker (d. 1852). Scotland delineated in a series of Views by J.M. W. Turner, David Roberts London: E. Gambert and Joseph Hogarth, [1847-] 1854.
LAWSON, John Parker (d. 1852). Scotland delineated in a series of Views by J.M. W. Turner, David Roberts London: E. Gambert and Joseph Hogarth, [1847-] 1854. 2 volumes, 2 o (600 x 435 mm). 2 half-titles, 2 printed titles (see below) and 90 FINE HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPHED PLATES mounted on stiff card, gilt edges (some minor foxing to some plates). Contemporary half morocco (three covers detached, some wear to spine ends and corners); slipcases. FIRST EDITION, EXTREMELY RARE COLORED STATE. One of the major achievements of topographical lithography in Britain and certainly one of the most attractive books on British scenery. The publisher Joseph Hogarth commissioned a large number of drawings of Scottish scenery from the foremost landscape artists of the day, including J.M.W. Turner, David Roberts J.D. Harding Joseph Nash Horatio Macculloch, D.O. Hill, W.A. Nesfield, Sir W. Allan, Clarkson Stanfield George Cattermore, W.L. Leitch, and Thomas Creswick The majority of plates were lithographed by Harding, with others by Carrick, Simpson, and Gauci. Lawson, who was responsible for the descriptive text, was an ordained minister, but in his latter days worked as a writer for Edinburgh booksellers. The plates are magnificent and the grandeur of the Scottish landscape seen through the eyes of such a group of artists makes this one of the outstanding topographical books of the 19th-century. Abbey states that the plate "Holyrood Palace" (no. 3 on the list of plates) was never issued, the entry being a duplication of no. 3. (According to a notice to subscribers the plate was omitted "in consequence of an accident"). Abbey calls for the titles for volume III ("as volume I plus 'II' stamped in by hand to make 'Vol. III'") and volume IV ("as volume I plus 'V' stamped in by hand to make 'Vol. IV'"). A loosely inserted notice to subscribers explains "that some of the Parts will not contain the Letter-Press illustrative of the Plates inserted therein" (as here). Abbey Scenery 493. (2)
