Lawson (John Parker . Scotland Delineated in a Series of Views by Clarkson Stanfield David Roberts George Cattermole J. D. Harding, W. L. Leitch, Joseph Nash Thomas Creswick Horatio MacCulloch. Drawn in Lithography by J. D. Harding. With Historical, Antiquarian, and Descriptive Letterpress, 1st edition, Joseph Hogarth [-E. Gambart and Co.,], 1847-50, 10 original parts only, containing half-title, title-page, dedication leaf, 1-168 (of 308) pp. text (Contents and List of Plates, 2 leaves, absent), each in original wood-engraved buff paper wrappers, 51 (of 90) hand-coloured lithographic plates mounted within gilt frames on stiff card leaves as issued, heightened with gum arabic, tissue-guards, part 1 with additional 2 pp. 'Scotland Delineated Advertiser' to rear, tipped-in 'Notice to Subscribers' slip to parts 3-6, laid-in advertisement slip and bifolium to part 6, part 1 front wrapper, half-title and title-page spotted and nicked, occasional marginal spotting to text-leaves, light to moderate spotting to a few plates, chiefly above the skyline and to mounts, but sometimes stronger and more extensive, notably to plates 29 (Linlithgow Palace) and 62 (Falkland Palace), part 1 wrappers split along spine, wrappers of other parts intact but gutta percha fragile, text-leaves loose in parts 3, 4 and 10, each part laid into original patterned green cloth porfolio with green roan backstrip and gilt vignette to front panel, parts 4 and 7 spines worn and cracked, elephant folio (64 x 45 cm) (Qty: 10) Provenance: Private collection, United Kingdom. Abbey Scenery 493; not in Tooley. The very rare hand-coloured issue, housed in the original wrappers and cloth portfolios, which are unmentioned in Abbey and almost unknown in commerce; the Robert and Maria Travis copy (2005) was catalogued as retaining the wrappers but with 'contemporary cloth' portfolios. Scotland Delineated is considered of the great topographical books of the 19th century, with the splendid hand-coloured lithographs doing justice to the work of some of the finest landscape painters of the day. A full list of extant plates is available on request.
